Wii Speak Channel Only Available to Those Who Buy It New

Animal Crossing's release comes with a surprise that a code is necessary to access the Wii Speak Channel. Nintendo is not making the service available for purchase by itself.
When the fine folks at MTV unpackaged the game (Animal Crossing), they were shocked to discover a 16-digit confirmation code that owners have to input in order to download the Wii Speak Channel.

Curious, MTV contacted Nintendo about the code and were told that the Wii Speak Channel will not be available for purchase, and that the only way to unlock it is to input the confirmation code. The peripheral will still work for in-game chatting, though.
