Miyamoto: "Mario Galaxy was conservative", "Twilight Princess was missing something"

Gothic Girl | November 01, 2008 | News | Wii Gamecube
Super Mario Galaxy and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess are two of the most-loved games on the Wii console (disregard the fact that one is a Gamecube port). So it comes as a surprise when Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto has this to say about both games ...
"What I've been saying to our development teams recently is that Twilight Princess was not a bad game, by any means. But, still, it felt like there was something missing," explains the Wii Fit creator. "And while, personally, I feel like Super Mario Galaxy was able to do some things that were very new and were very unique, at the same time, from another perspective, certain elements of it do feel somewhat conservative in terms of how far we branched out with design. And so this is something I've been talking to both of those teams about."
These comments are very telling of Nintendo's current attitude. Both Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy were, waggle aside, rather traditional videogames. That Shigeru Miyamoto is being so critical of these proper games -- arguably two of the very best titles available on the Wii -- says a lot about Nintendo and Miyamoto's approach to the games industry now.

Mario hurtling through Galaxies like a Meteor was conservative?

What is wrong with him hurtling through the galaxy like a meteor?

It was too fun for the interent, so now they have to make sarcastic jokes that don't go anywhere.

Why does everyone call him the "Wii Fit creator", he should be known for so much more than that?

He would never bash Wii Sports and Wii Fit, because if he does, then no-one will buy a Wii.

He said certain elements felt conservative. Galaxy seems to be a lot more like 64 than Sunshine, in my eyes it really has no defining feature which separates it from past Mario games

Of course, because lots of past Mario games let you walk around on 3D planets.

But what does that add to the gameplay? If that's the one stand out feature it doesn't seem to me to be something to blow the mind. It's neat and like Miyamoto said only some elements feel conservative, the planet feature is not one of those elements.

So, if you were Miyamoto, what would you have added instead of circumnavigating planets?

Ok, I respect this guy, but how the hell can he give THESE games crit and treat WiiFit/Music like there Masterpieces?

lmao. I couldn't have said it better.

Though, I'll personally agree that Twilight Princess was missing something. Namely magic. But, here's to hoping this new Zelda will be amazing after this "criticism."

But...wait a second guys. Wiifit/Music must be Masterpieces cause Miyamoto gets his ideas from real life experiences. It must be true, he wouldn't lie to us now.

Wii music is far from a masterpiece. It is a massive failure.

I totally agree with him. Both were great games, but they didn't seem to have that classic Nintendo spark.

Almost all artists are there own harshest critics. I think the article is heavily putting it's own twist on things. Seems more like tabloid journalism than broadsheet. Honestly if Will Wright criticized Spore I think people would have a positive reaction as people would be thinking he has better in store. Of course when the first sentence is 'Former design icon and current maker of pretend videogames Shigeru Miyamoto has been casting a critical eye over his team's earlier Wii games' we should already be able to tell the bias of the article is. I am surprised so many people were so easily swayed by this though.

Will Wright did criticize Spore, and everyone reacted in the exact same way.

It's just that Miyamoto has been spewing out more random shit than a broken sewer mane.

*bleep* Wii Fit and Wii Sports. If you're comparing them to the likes of Zelda and Mario, then you need to get your stupid head out of your pragmatic asshole.

With the way things are going, Zelda and Mario will be dropped and some new Wii Fit/Sports/Music mascots will replace them.

I'm too lazy to find the source, but a new Mario was confirmed at the same time the new Zelda was. Though, to be honest, I'm definitely way more interested in the Zelda title.

I'll still anticipate the Zelda title more, just because I love me some Zelda, but I'd honestly almost like to see Nintendo pull a Megaman 8 with Mario. That's not to say I don't want a shiny brand new Mario with awesome Wii-mote-ness of judgement, but a classic side-scroller would actually be pretty cool.

If we get a 3D Mario game that uses the Wii to it's fullest potential, then I'd definitely be more interested in that.
While Mario Galaxy's planet idea was interesting, it seriously limited the exploration value that the game could have had. In the end, it felt like a 2D Mario game because it was so simple (i.e. "Start here, follow a straight line until the end of the level"). I was hoping for something bigger and vaster than Mario 64, but that's not what was delivered

I acctually liked the idea of having it a point A to point B thing, it was very fun.

The problem with Super Mario 64 is that it doesn't tell you where to go. It just gives you a one sentance hint when you entre the level and that's it. While it was fun exploring everywhere, it got annoying after awhile.

There's nothing wrong with what Super Mario 64 did. In fact most games don't even tell you where to go. Personally I like exploring doing this my way then a point A to B sort of thing.

    Let me get this straight

    Wii music is your "masterpiece"

And you find things wrong with zelda and Mario??

I can only hope that you forgot to point out the flaws in

    Wii Sports (durr)
    Wii Fit
    Wii Play
and let's not forget your "masterpiece"
    Wii Music

Because each of these games is more deserving in your line of work and closer to your heart than Mario or Zelda.

In my opinion, it doesn't matter what he does now, he is videogames.

He has done enough for the industry for me to just put my faith in him, the only time I'll stop believing in Mr Miyamoto is if he starts crapping in game cases and selling them.
