Dead Space wants to terrify you with 'Silence'

Linkin Park Fan | October 06, 2008 | News | PC Playstation 3
When ever the music starts to rise and intensify, you know something is coming up... Which kinda ruins the whole 'scaring you' part of movies, right? Well Dead Space wants to change that by using the silence to its advantage. Because when everything is all nice and quiet, you never expect scary as hell aliens to jump out of nowhere.
As we’ve seen in terrible American remakes of Japanese horror film classics (The Grudge, anyone?), it’s obvious that filmmakers always want to use music and sound effects to their advantage when attempting to scare the pants off its audience. However, after such banal usage in 99% of the horror films released throughout the years, it tends to become familiar. When the music swells in a horrifying tidal wave of strings and accompanying instrument, we’re all ready to jump in our seats, expecting to be afraid of whatever’s coming out onscreen.

The creators of Dead Space are looking to put these tactics to good use, once and for all, throwing in the spice of actual silence to instill fear and to get our blood pumping, rather than forcing music to do the job through the entirety of the game

Like it. Hopefully it'll be like a subtle hint. Like the opposite of Half-Life/Halo where when you hear music you know you're in for a fight.

The developers of Dead Space are really drawing inspiration and adapting past experiences to the production of their game. Such research and commitment to the scare factor can only produce good results for the game. Hope this is a good one.

Yeah EA, they are really doing something special with this and i mean this is the developers first proper self made horror game, they are running into this with about as much knowledge as they did when they made Skate. It is absolutely incredible how when EA really try they can make industry beating games in genres out of their comfort zone. Dead Space looks like a horror made by a group of demented Japanese developers and not by a group of Americans that wanted a change from making poor licenced games.

Yeh. This really changes my opinion about EA. I regard them as assholes who throw out repetitive titles annually. But kudos to them for really attempting to change their image. Its so admirable; the horror genre is somewhat misconceived and often limited in many aspects; but Dead Space is doing what Resident Evil should have done; Action + Horror.

The developers are really talented and they deserved all the acolades they receive. For an arrogant prick like me to change my opinion of EA is quite something. Skate was awesome too. I applaude EA for getting in there.

    Nice change....

But doesn't it defeat the purpose to let people know that it works this way?

Now, those that read about this (which admittedly, wouldn't be everybody getting the game lol), will be on guard when it is quiet.

You'd probably find out fast anyway. Like I said earlier. Whenever I heard music on Half-Life I'd get ready for a big fight. It wasn't long before I noticed music meant tough fight.

Silence would be subtle though, like you probably wouldn't notice right away. Something would just feel of, then you'd be like OH SHI-

Exactly when it's silent you cannot get prepared even if you get used to it you can't as silence is silence, there is nothing you can take from it to discern whether you are safe and in danger, and what is scarier is when all is quiet and still you focus on the other sounds in the world, the chilling scutter of boney legs on steel, the drip of blood, the spark of a broken computer etc... Music scares people through regime, people are used to music = scare in movies and games so without the music this game could be one mind*bleep* of a video game.
