"Do we need Blu-ray now?"

ITANI | April 18, 2007 | News | Playstation 3
Well I think Sony did a good job introducing Blu Ray to the market and the reason I think this is because of games like MGS4. It wouldn't be possible for MGS4 to be released on 360 because of the HD-DVD discs capacity, which is a plus for the PS3.
Questionaer: A while ago you posted a response to the question about needing Blu-ray for gaming. After seeing games like MotorStorm which took up 16GB of space and loose talk about Metal Gear Solid 4 filling up 50GB, has your opinion changed or do you still feel that its not necessary?

Answerer: Hey Valcore. While this was no doubt a long time ago, I don't remember saying we don't need Blu-ray, but I probably said that we're not ready for it yet.

I still feel that Blu-ray is not an absolute necessity for gaming at this current stage, though it will be within the next few years. There's no denying that Xbox 360 DVD-9 games like Gears of War can produce huge, beautiful gaming experiences, but as technology becomes more advanced, the amount of data on discs will definitely increase. Hence, Blu-ray is a big plus for Sony developers (though consumers do suffer the higher price tag).

What's interesting, though, is that the extra disc space isn't just a benefit to graphics, but to other things like audio and physics.

I feel both ways about this now because I think that, for a while, developers were making games for the sake of making them bigger, but there seems to be a distinct move back to quality over quantity. Still, though, making an more interactive smaller world still takes up lots of space, so price aside, Blu-ray space is a benefit to games, even if it's not used all the time.

Actually saying HD dvds don't have enough room is a common mistake, a dual layered HD dvd is 30 gigs, which is easily enough for any game at the moment(blue ray disks are 25 gigs per layerlayer, hd dvd are 15), also Toshiba has produced a prototype 45 gig HD dvd because of this I think blue ray isn't really needed at all the problem is that the xbox 360 doesn't use hd dvds for games but only normal dvds which I believe can hold around 9 gigs max.

So honestly microsofts mistake was not using an hd dvd drive for their games.

I think it was a great idea to put it in. This is next gen so we need next gen technology, not old gen.

Basically the 360 games will have a capacity limit and some game developers won't be able to give it their all if they are limited & Kojima is the first developer to take advantage of the PS3's Blu Ray feature.

But that's not because of HD dvds limitations, it's because of microsoft not puting an HD dvd games drive in their consoles and using normal dvds, HD dvd is not old technology, normal DVD drives are though.

actually it is limited. and blue ray is needed for what sony plans to do with games this time around. see while xbox is going for graphics. ps3 is using graphics audio and physics. like they said makes gamming experience better. and the reason y MS didnt use the HD dvd is cause of extra money cost. think about it if they put that in, there system would be just as much as ps3. so again there going for an early jump on them, which like i said will be there down fall. the future is blue-ray the future is ps3.
