LittleBigPlanet: User DLC Rewards To The Creator?

tidus04 | July 21, 2008 | News | Playstation 3
In addition to Sony's plans of allowing gamers to submit there created levels to them which in turn could become potential downloadable content for the game are now planning on extending this idea in which they are now planning on rewarding that creator with a cut of the money that was gained by the product.
Sony has stated that when LittleBigPlanet is released this October, it will allow certain users who have created content for the game to charge other players for downloading that content. The service is being likened to online consumer powerhouses iTunes and eBay.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's President, David Reeves, has the statement and PS3 Fanboy has the report: "What we're trying to do with LittleBigPlanet is almost iTunes meets eBay in the sense that once an individual or a developer has qualified by producing certain levels or certain add-ons, they will then be able in the future to exchange these and make money out of them. Eventually, it's feasible that you might well see the first LittleBigPlanet millionaire!"

"Even if you charge less than one euro," Reeves continued, "it doesn't take many downloads if you've got a really strong LittleBigPlanet level for people to be able to make money. It's a great way for people to show others what they can do."

There you have it! TVG suggests getting your gaming fingers into some classic platformers for inspiration while you're waiting for one of Sony's biggest titles of the year.

Yeah you add money to the PSN Wallet you buy it and the money goes to Sony, Sony will then pass on your cut of the money to you via wireless transfer to your paypal account or even direct to your bank account. I say cut of the money because as with anything the host of the server/site will take a bit but this could work unless everyone starts abandoning the online site as it becomes too expensive i mean, buying 40 levels at $1 each while that is longer than most games the quality can be temperamental, hopefully there may be a try before you buy or the ability to record you playing it a trailer of sorts for your level or series of levels.

That is the only way I can see it happen myself :]

I do like the sound of this if it is implemented to a good standard and just hope they are able to bring this to more games in the future, shame it isnt on something I would like myself though xD

Stop being so cheap, every other game on the planet these days would make you pay for content and new levels, why is it so different that the level is made by an amateur. Amateurs can make levels better than Media Molecule can so money should be an option.

The levels can last as long as the gamer decides i mean a level can last 40 minutes if the gamer is creative enough to make it interesting.

But remember there's a limit on how much content you can put in one level.
Still I like the idea, even if I don't end up using it myself.

Well it depends on who created it. Not to mention these rights are only given to those that have proven themselves good enough to charge for their levels. You won't get some noob creating a 30 second level and charging 2 dollars for it. Only the elite few will have the ability to charge.
This is an excellent idea though and will really make people put a lot of thought into their levels rather then just throwing it online as soon as it's somewhat playable.

I think by elite few they mean anyone that has created over 3 levels, i agree they won't let a noob make a $60 level or hell a bundle of levels for that much, but i am sure once you have shown that you are sticking to LittleBigPlanet and you are not going to make a short level, tout it as the best and by the time anyone can complain you are gone $500 richer. I mean Sony aren't losing anything MM aren't losing anything the real winners are the gamers i can see Sony getting people to charge as fast as possible so they can start getting a cut of their profits.

You know I think there is even bigger potential for future game designers tan anything else. Just think how great it would look on a resume if you could show a profitable LBP level. Or possibly even just contacted because of your game level. Still I know one thing that was always a big plus when I was shopping myself out as a programmer was work experience. Showing anything that you were actually able to sell was a huge plus in that catagory.

The smartest move on Sony's part though would of course be to set it up so that the default or perhaps even the only option is the PSN wallet. Because then you would be compelled to buy more online games and content. LBP could create it own economy.

As long as the majority of it is free I'm okay with this, I doubt many people will actual purchase a level when they could just recreate it though.
