Sony says MGS 4 on the 360 is impossible

After Mircosoft revealed that Final Fantasy 13 was coming to the 360 at their E3 2008 Press Conference, people started to speculate that MGS 4 would also become a 360 game. Jack Tretton, the CEO of SCEA, says bringing MGS 4 over to the 360 would be impossible, partly because of Blu-Ray.
Following fervent speculation that Metal Gear Solid 4 would follow Final Fantasy in becoming a PlayStation-associated brand that moves onto Xbox 360, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton has argued no other console could handle the technical demands of Konami’s the Konami title.

Speaking to assembled press at the platform holder's conference in LA earlier today, Tretton added that the Blu-Ray capabilities of PS3 had already seen of HD-DVD – and would now see off the company’s console competition.

Not too sure anyone is going to be buying the Blu-Ray excuse anymore now that FFXIII is going to XBOX. I'm sure if they really wanted to MGS4 could be ported.......but just by looking at vids, previews etc, it's pretty damn obvious it was made for the PS3 exclusively just by the product placement.

You'd have to change the script, remove the PS3 on the Nomad, remove the Apple computers/iPod, remove the Dualshock, change certain pictures, dumb down the audio, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some things, but I don't see it happening.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but according to the articles I've read, the audio is a big reason why the game took up so much space.

The audio is full surround uncompressed, and Kojima stressed how much he didn't want to compromise that, even on PS3. Even if they left it uncompressed on the 360, they would still have a hard time fitting it on multiple discs. You lose quality with compression.

Compression reduces quality, i.e. "dumbing down". Seriously, they would have to do a lot of compression to make it work and you probably would notice a difference. People don't seem to understand how many sound effects, voice tracks, etc. are part of the game and how much space they really take.

I would consider "dumbing down" to be removing aspects of the music.

Maybe cut the music, or removal of certain sound effects.

Well, while I admit that it's not entirely horrible to be forced to switch discs every now and then, I have to say that it kind of ruins the mood a little. Especially in games like FFXIII, where they usually get to a pretty exciting point in the story, and then the screen darkens and tells you to put in the next disc.

I will buy this for PS3, even if I did have a 360. All I can do now is hope that versus XIII is exclusive.

    a. I wouldn't mind MGS4 on the 360 take up 2-3 disks. It's worth it

    b. MGS4 likely uses such lazy use of disk space, that it's pretty viable

Yeah, absolutely not. That's a ridiculous amount of audio compression that would have a noticeable effect on audio quality. Keep in mind that many sounds, music, etc. have to be carried on each disc which takes away from the available space on each disc for graphics, etc. that are part of the story.

Donnelly, you can repeat yourself all you want. What do you think I am saying when I say dumb it down? You think I'm saying it would sound shitty? Compression loses quality, it's a fact. It doesn't mean it sounds like static, but that doesn't change its drawbacks either. CDs in stores are compressed because the HD lossless audio in its raw form is compressed, or dumbed down for the retail product. Most people don't know the difference, either because they have not heard lossy audio or because they don't know about it, but again, it doesn't change the fact that compression loses quality, i.e dumbing down. What's your definition of dumbing something down?

Dumbing down would be to simplify something in order for someone to understand. You're dumbing down audio terms right now. Layman speak. Like 60GB Ipod doesn't make sense to a lot of people. So they put 10,000 songs on the box.

You should say R3t4ard(I use 1337 speak to avoid censorship). Compression R3t4rds the audio quality.

Shut up jack, stop talking out of your ass for once. MGS4 is completely possible on the 360. If FF13 was touted to be only possible on the PS3, and now its on the 360, then you know damn well MGS4 is also possible. God sometimes he's an idiot. Logic fails when it comes to this type of thing. Also iLL Im pretty sure there's ways around all those issues. 6 discs is around 51GB of space bigger than the dual-layered BD. which means they don't have to sacrifice much if anything.

FB it's not just about disc space. A lot of the dialogue and cutscenes would need changing too. All the flashbacks in Act 4 would have to go, the codec between Snake and Otacon about Bluray would have to go and it'll even effect the boss fight with Mantis as he makes many references to his fight with Snake on PS1 i.e. the memory card trick.

Why, why and...why? Why can the "flashbacks in act 4" only be played on a PS3? There is nothing wrong with saying something about blu-ray, unless it's something like "gee, good thing this game is on a blu ray disk" or something. And even if it is like that, it's removal I'm sure is hardly a reason to not port the game. It's not integral, I don't think. And what affect will it have for Mantis exactly? What's the problem with him referencing a "memory card trick" or a previous game?

lol that's exactly what Otacon says about the Blu-Ray disc, also adding that they're on PS3. All the product placement is there for a reason, not just for face time. The Mantis flashback actually shows the original PlayStation. There are many things they would have to change. 360 would be getting a gimped version in some ways. Not saying it's impossible, but I don't believe the motivation is there, and I hope it stays that way.

Could have been talking to Cdemon but whatever

The flashbacks about the PS1 scene was the one I was referring to. They would have two choices, either cut it or leave it as it is and I doubt Microsft would have want there competitor being advertised in a game on their console. Like I said not a major problem but these little annoyances would make it all the harder to port, unlike in most games where you just copy and paste.

Technically the PS1 isn't their competitor though..

Honestly, I see no need in having to change anything just because of product placement (other than maybe Snake using the sixaxis controller). Wasn't there a soccer game for 360 that had a PS3 advertisement on the sidelines? If they didn't mind that, I could see MS surviving a few Blu-Ray mentions.

Maybe so. But MGS4 doesn't have a "few" blu-ray mentions. It is about 20 hours of Kojima humping Sony's leg. There are PS3s and PSPs all over the place. Sony and Apple logos everywhere. And of course the infamous codex message about how great the PS3 is.

Seriously does anyone really believe that Kojima would ride Sony like that then turn around and port the game? You would have to be delirious to expect that to happen.
