65nm RSX Graphics Chip for PS3 comes Autumn this year!!

Its finally stated that the 65nm RSX graphic chip will arrive this Autumn. This was stated none other than Kaz Hirai himself. He also stated this one is more efficient than the current one out.
Also noted that they have been cutting the manufacturing costs by reducing the amount components and decreasing the size of the chips.

This could make another price-cut possible in the near future. To some still waiting for the PS3, should be some good news. ;)
Hirai said during a Thursday PlayStation business briefing that Sony has been cutting PS3 manufacturing costs by reducing the number of components and decreasing the size of chips.

"The Cell and RSX used in PS3s at launch were manufactured using a 90nm process technology. And now all PS3 Cells have shifted to 65nm process technology since last holiday season," he said.

Will this effect future games played on older PS3s? I would hope not.

    No not at all.

Normally companies move to smaller fabrication sizes to help increase the volume of chips produced as well as reduce power consumption or offer faster speeds with the new overhead.

In this case what you get is a lower power consuming chip (although I doubt they'll disclose the wattage reduction) and it'll produce even more chips per wafer for the company while also reducing heat.

So basically, cooler running lower power consuming chips that allow Sony to squeeze out more PS3's per pressing.

Usually a bit less noise but that's about it I think.

Smaller wafer means more yield per die. Besides that, 65 nm RSX and Cell means less power consumed, less heat (and sound form fans) created, and an overall more efficient system.

This is great news! After Sony stating they lost Billions on last price cut though, I wouldn't be holding out for another one anytime in the near future.
