PSN is now at 9.8 million users, more figures inside

Today at a group business meeting in Tokyo, Kaz Hirai announced quite a few things about the Playstation brand. One of the things was that the Playstation Network is now at 9.8 million users, and that over 170 million pieces of content have been downloaded by its users.

Some other tidbits are that the PSP has hit the 37 million mark, and that over 12 million PS3s have been sold.
Sony revealed tons of figures today, including one concerning the PlayStation Network. The company has stated in its corporate strategy meeting that over 9.8 million people have registered accounts on the PSN. In total, 170 million downloads have been accumulated between these users. In related news, it was just last month that Japan celebrated making the one millionth mark.

    Holy crap 9.8 Million users on the PSN in only a short amount of time Wow. Truly impressive. How much away are they from XBL users?

    PSN is free. I never understand how they can boast about these numbers. You can't even call them sales figures. All the user has to do is register. Its like having an email address.

    I think they will have to charge for it later. I mean, with so many users the servers require quite the maintenance...:S

    i dont think they are bragging about sales figures so much as letting 3rd parties know that developing games for the ps3 is worth while. its like " here look at all these fancy numbers we have"

      I don't see how XX amount of people (which is less than the PS3 installed base) playing online says to developers that making games for the system is worthwhile..?

    9.8 Million registered users means developers have potentially 9.8 million customers (plus those that aren't yet registered). And Sony is too smart to charge for online, it's all they have against XBL (as much as I hate to say it, XBL isn't too bad for the price).

    9.8 million users hua? Very impressive. However I'de like to point out the psp stats. The psp has 37 million users and yet sony has yet to come up with a firmware update to the adobe flash player to watch videos on the net. This is why people use homebrew.
