First Look into NHL 09

a Dude | June 07, 2008 | News | PC Playstation 3
This article highlights some new key features for EA Sports upcoming NHL 09. It introduces a 'Be A Pro Mode' which is similar to Fifa's and Madden's Superstar Mode. It also highlights on some new defense controls such as lifting an opponent's stick and better poke checking. For offense it says a new one handed deke system will be added to the skills stick. Finally, Online Team Play will be increased to a full 6v6.
First off, the biggest feature in NHL 09 seems to be the brand-new Be a Pro mode. Inspired by the feature of the same name from last year's FIFA 08, this mode will let you strap on the stakes as an up-and-coming hockey player. After creating your player from scratch, you'll sign up with an AHL team (EA naturally has the full AHL license) and begin to find your way through your career as a hot minor-league prospect.

I gotta say, that "be a pro" mode sounds completely awesome, it should be a lot of fun. But I just hope that EA Canada (no wonder the Wings suck so much in NHL 08 and ottowa was awesome, it's created in Canadia!) doesn't just focus on different games modes and features, and improve the core gameplay like the shitty passing, hitting and player switching.

Can't wait till it comes out.

The only thing I don't like about Be A Pro Mode is you are going to have to sit on the bench in between your shifts. I mean at first it might seem like nothing but after you play a lot of games I don't think I'm going to want to watch CPU playing.

I hope they'll allow you to save the settings on the control scheme to classic, cause in 08 the control scheme and how everything was set up was difficult. I liked the old settings better, while me learn the new skill stick system. Also I think there needs to be DLC where the ref can actually be hit, having blood in the game, make it more realistic. Cause 08 was better than 07 but by no means was it great.

I don't really think they should have refs getting hit. That is pretty stupid and would get real annoying real fast. Also, if they put in blood they would have to up the rating from E and they don't want to do that for obvious reasons...

Its not even realistic at all, whats the point of having a game with great graphics only to be dumb. It adds something new to the sport games. Who cares if it ups the rating it would do them well considering how poor EA games have been since who knows how long, hell as good as NHL08 was to NHL07 it was still a pretty mediocre game.

So adding blood to a hockey game and letting you hit the referee would make it more realistic and a better game? Uh no... And they don't up the rating because then they would lose some marketing. Some ten year old kid wants the game but his mom says no cuz' it is teen. That is blatantly obvious, dude...

Like I said the sport games are supposed to be realistic, which not adding it won't make it realistic now would it?
Besides that maybe have it a DLC so you can add it to the older players.

Realistic to the point where it doesn't interfere with the gameplay or fun-ness. Refs being objects in the game would just be annoying.

Well obviously it would make it "realistic" but that is knitpicking and it really would add anything to the gameplay.
