Why the Japanese aren't interested in First-Person and Third-Person Shooters.

Gothic Girl | June 06, 2008 | News | Playstation 3 XBOX 360
It's no secret that third-person and first-person shooters generally don't do well in Japan. So Famitsu Magazine recently dedicated an 8 page article to getting Japanese gamers into shooters. And what better way to attract Japanese audiences to something than to dress it up in pink and make it seem cute?

Famitsu also polled it's readers to find out if they had any experience playing shooters. 74.8% said they have, but only 51% said they would play them again.
An eight page Famitsu article called "Shall we shoot a little?" and featuring a bikini lady holding a gun tackles first-person and third-person shooters. The magazine polled readers to see what experience they have with FPS or TPS games. 74.8 percent have played these types of games, while 51 percent of those said they'd like to play FPS or TPS games again. Reasons for disinterest didn't include the stereotypical FPS-games-make-Japanese-nauseous, but did include these responses from Famitsu readers:

quote
"I'm not interested."

"The games seem difficult."

"I don't know what the point of these games is."

"I'm worried about playing them because I'm a beginner."

I tell ya, I totally understand this. FPS is intimidating. Now: before the flamewars start, hear me out. When you go in all alone, you don't know what you are doing, you get killed 20 times in a row before even getting close to shooting someone else, it's a bit tough for the ego. No one helps, you get called every name under the sun.

That being said, if you can find a great clan, one that will teach you how to play MP (and there is NO comparison between SP and MP, it's two totally different things) then you will hav ethe most fun anywhere.

I know what you mean. FPS games online are great fun for the experienced, but pure frustration for the beginners. I mean, look at Counter-Strike - widely lauded as one of the best online games ever made - yet simultaneously the most vicious, infruriating game any beginner is likely to play. Starting out in that game is like teaching a child how to swim by throwing him in the Atlantic Ocean and telling him to make his way to shore.

The first real FPS i finished was COD4 lol, I was intimidated about going on MP as i only just started with FPS's. So i decided to go on and just stick at it, i wasn't taught by a clan i just kept at it. Now i come first practically every time, it's really easy when you are used to controls and strategies.

Aww come on, every game looks hard when you first play it. I remember playing Gears of War online for the first time. I think for about the first week and a half I averaged like 2 kills per match. Eventually I got good at the game and now I get at least 7 kills per match, 10 in matches with 5+ rounds. Everyone starts off as a beginner, that's just a fact of life. If you advance or not just depends on if you're willing to stick with it or give up.

It's more around the fact that these people have trouble using both analog sticks at the same time. Ryan Payton mentioned this and explained that Japanese gamers were going to have to start getting used to the "Shooter" control scheme sooner or later. At least starting with MGS4 which has TPS controls.

I have to disagree with you a bit, supernova. on-line FPS are really rough because you play against people who have been playing FPS for years, and these folks are generally not casual type players. I mean some FPS people play every single day multiple hours, it's just tough to compete.

yes: there are ways to make the leap easier (play the campaign, join a noob loving clan etc.)

I believe that one of the problems with FPS is that not a lot of time seems to go into the SP campaign. I mean most of them are what... 10ish hours at most. Not that much to become really proficient, like the lads and lasses who have been playing for years.

It's a tough genre to break into.
