Soul Calibur IV will feature a third Star Wars character

chautemoc | June 05, 2008 | News | Playstation 2 Playstation 3
Yep, it ain't just Yoda and Darth Vader anymore in the upcoming Soul Calibur title. Namco Bandai dropped another bomb today, revealing the "Secret Apprentice," the main character in the (also) upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will be featured, this one being in both versions. Talk about pimpage.
[Today] Namco Bandai channeled Yoda with the announcement that "there is another." Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game will feature the Secret Apprentice character from LucasArts' upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, allowing for proper lightsaber-on-lightsaber duels in a fighting game for the first time since 1997's original PlayStation game Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi.

The Secret Apprentice stars in Force Unleashed as Darth Vader's first Sith underling. Since the game takes place between the events of Episode III and Episode IV (the most recent Star Wars film and the very first Star Wars film), the Secret Apprentice must live up to his name and carry out Vader's orders while keeping his existence under wraps.

Soulcalibur IV is set for release on the Xbox 360 and PS3 in regular and limited editions on July 29. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will follow for the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Nintendo DS on September 16.

You think they could have given a more known character but I guess you take what you can get. Probably a deal they had to make with Lucas Arts to get the other two.

Awesome. A bit of an odd choice for a Star Wars character, but I'm certainly not complaining. Looking forward to this game.

I'm really sick of this Star Wars knob slobbing. Yea its a great movie/saga/franchise, but whats the difference between having these completely out of place characters in the game or having in game ads?

What characters do you want in SC? Kratos, dante Vergil and others don't even fit. I actually like the starwars characters. I mean every SC has had characters from others games in there. Tekken characters too.

Though Street Fighter characters would be kickass though.

I agree, iLLmatic. This is just plain ridiculous.

Final, Kratos fits a lot better than the Star Wars characters...he has conflict with Ares, God of War, and guess what, he's involved in SC. He ordered Astaroth's resurrection, and nearly killed Maxi with his power. Kratos can be involved.

Kratos in a fighting game would be out of place, same as Dante and Vergil. I already debated this before.

He would just be an over powered guy and if you take away his powers he would just be ruined. Trust me he has no place in SC or a fighting game. And knowing R@D they wouldn't allow them to use their trademark character.

You're missing the point. You said that Kratos didn't fit. Well guess what, I beg to friggin' differ. He would fit, much better than Star Wars characters, who are pretty damn broken as is from the videos. An over-powered guy? Yeah, like Yoda doesn't look over-powered. With his unique weapons, it'll be a great addition to the game. Not to mention his tied-in story.

No I said he wouldn't fit for obvious reasons, like I said I debated this before. Besides you missed my last point "And knowing R@D they wouldn't allow them to use their trademark character".

At least this one is on both consoles.

Anyhow, this apprentice is supposed to have some insane force powers (in the game he is featured in), so hopefully that translates into strong fighting abilities in this game....

Final Blade, I would like to see, oh I don't know, some Soul Calibur characters! Nobody said anything about Kratos or Dante, but the game doesn't NEED Star Wars characters. If you can't see the marketing ploy, then you have no say to begin with. However, since you brought it up, Kratos would be the perfect fit for the game. The histories alone mesh well. If your only excuse is that he would be too powerful, then I have a question: Have you seen any of the videos at all?? You honestly think the Star Wars characters will be balanced? You think Darth *bleep*ing Vader will be a fair opponent? Kratos would be a perfect fit. He has his own weapons, he already has a host of grab moves, his Ares armor could get destroyed, his move set and magic already exist, and most importantly he could actually slide into the story, unlike a damn Jedi knight.

And for the record, Soul Calibur did not always have these thrown in characters. It was only with Soul Calibur II's multiplatform release. Soul Edge and Soul Blade did not have them, nor did Soul Calibur 1 and 3. And I hope you don't mean Ready @ Dawn when you say R@D. Kratos is Sony's character. God of War was created by Davide Jaffe and his team and Sony Santa Monica Studios. Are you going to say that Spawn and Link made sense too?

Actually SC3 also had extra's which included Yoshimitsu and all that jazz.

Fact is your writing off these characters based of purely nothing. We haven't played the game, we don't know if they can be tied in well. How about save the critique until We play the game. I believe they know what they're doing and they will be tied in the story well, be well balanced and be a good addition.

No one is writing off anyone all iLL was saying was that why Star Wars, i mean seriously Darth Vader is awesome and that little green bunny Yoda is also a badass, but i mean talk about bad characters to add, i will be the first to sigh when Darth strikes saber to sword in a fight, in the Star Wars universe his Saber would slice right through it, he would secondly slice through anyone and thirdly they couldn't get near him anyway, so this is a bad idea from the get go, will it work yes for the right reasons i doubt it, it will work because it will sell well, but i won't use either character and i will loathe fighting against Vader or Yoda...

It is seriously like added Pikachu to Dead or Alive 5 or Jigglypuff to Tekken 6, they may have been paid lots of money to add them but are they are a good idea no, should i be happy and accept them no, should i like and have expected someone closer to the games style yes... People are always going to be happy and others unhappy, and the unhappy will always mention another character that could fit better in hindsight, unfortunately hindsight doesn't come until a decision has been made and has slapped you in the face... End of story i don't like the idea of having two Star Wars characters in my none Star Wars game.

quote Sora from Soulcaliburuniverse on QORE
"Guest characters were introduced in SC2, and we've been trying to really get back to it. We've thought of characters that made sense to the franchise and would be cool to play, and we ended up with Darth Vader/SW."
Seriously Nikki that analogy is pretty weak.
Fact is they're GUEST characters, something new to play with. No one is forcing you to play as them, and yes you guys are writing them off.

You do know Storm that PS3 owners will get Yoda at one point as well as 360 getting Vader. So basically your better off not getting the game.

...Yoshimitsu? Even though he's featured in Tekken and Soul Calibur, he's not the same Yoshimitsu. Similar stories and such, but still, he is not the same Yoshimitsu.

Granted, Link did somewhat make more sense then Spawn and Heihachi, due to his story's time period and his weapons, but meh, I agree, Kratos would be a great addition...at least better than Star Wars characters.

Why would they need to 'sellout' like this? Adding Star Wars characters...bad move, imo. I'm willing to bet a good amount of online players will use these guest characters as they are more powerful. Good thing I'm not getting the 360 version, Yoda will be hell.
