Ryu and Ken won't appear in Street Fighter movie!

Gothic Girl | June 04, 2008 | News | Misc
It has been announced that Ryu and Ken will not appear in the Street Fighter movie, as there are already too many characters present.
Yes, you heard that right... there are too many characters in the movie, so the creators are unable include two of the main characters of the entire game series!
“Are Ken and Ryu appearing in this film?”

I’m gonna let a far more qualified man, our Producer Patrick Aiello take a crack at this one. Afterall, he had a hand in the decision:

PATRICK: “Justin, Ashok and Capcom got together and decided to make it more of an origin story for Chun Li. There are just way too many characters in the Street Fighter universe to cram them all into one film. We want to do each one the justice he/she deserves. So, in short, Ken and Ryu will not be appearing in this film. But, that doesn’t mean we wont see our red and white-clad heroes in potential sequels…”

So there ya have it fight fans. Your suspicions are confirmed. No Ken and Ryu.

PATRICK: Now, as a result of this approach, it’d be silly to put Neal McDonough’s Bison in a bright red suit and captain’s hat with a pair of humongous shoulder pads. It works great in the video game, but in real life, it just wouldn’t look intimidating. The same can be said for Balrog. He’s an enforcer. A killer. A take-no-shit brawler to the core. And so, how scary would he be on screen if he beat people up with boxing gloves and a pair of blue short-shorts?

All that said, do not worry. We haven’t turned a blind eye on the game we all know and love. At some point, Chun Li will sport her trademark buns (the ones in her HAIR!) and of course, Vega’s still got the mask and claw, for starters."

Oh wow, you've completely dashed all my hopes for this movie. And I thought the director for the first one had screwed up bad enough, but not even putting Ken and Ryu? I don't even know which league to classify this in. It's a shame too because the casting in this movie was decent (nothing *bleep*ed like Van Damme as Guile).

Also, what's up with changing the trademark outfits? "[I]t’d be silly to put Neal McDonough’s Bison in a bright red suit and captain’s hat with a pair of humongous shoulder pads...It just wouldn’t look intimidating." Right, and Bison in a suit would make us wet our pants...

They don't want to ruin the reputations of their two lead characters after this movie fails as the first one did.

Yeah I realized that this could be a possibility. But I still wonder why they're taking such a bold risk by creating a movie on Chun Li first. They sound cocky enough as if it's going to sell through the roof and warrant sequels.

"Okay, so here's some background history on all the characters which is what makes the series good."
"Screw that! We're going to rework everything! It always works in other game->movie adaptations right? ...Right?"

Kinda was expecting that since I saw the casting. It doesn't make sense to include those two, to be honest. This is about Chun-Li, Ryu and Ken being in it would cause a list of complaints, such as: "Why didn't they make this film based around those two?" or "Why didn't they get more screen time?"

My favorite Street Fighter character is Ken, but I'd rather he not be in this film for issues such as those.

Thats like not adding in Taki in the Soul Calibur movie since there's too many people, but she's the star of the game.

Fact is I already called how much of a failure this will be, even to the 96 one. At least they had Ken and Ryu present.

Without Ken and Ryu Street Fighter wouldn't be SF. And every fan knows this.

Thanks for ruining SF. Who gives a shit about Chun Li? Even the animated series had more involvement between the 3 than this movie ever could.

You fail to realize that each character has a significant story. The '96 film was more about Guile than anything, the animated films more about Ryu and Ken. Chun-Li has quite a story behind her, and it would be good to educate those who are unaware of it. It's good to see her being appreciated. I don't like her too much, Cammy's way better, but still, her story's good.

Another thing, when it comes to fighting games, there is no real star. There may be more popular characters than others, but star? Nope. Again, Ken and Ryu would just take away from the movie rather than add. And to say this is a failure without even waiting to see the damn thing shows how judgemental you are. Give it a chance, ffs.

Fact is, Chun-Li has a good fanbase going for her. She was one of the few female fighters in the past introduced in fighting games and such. She was the only female in the first SF II game, and was a force to be reckoned with. People admired that. After Chun-Li's appearance, SNK and other companies decided to follow in her footsteps, adding characters such as Mai Shiranui (she's one of my favorites xD), etc..

That animated series was not canon.

Actually its more to it than that. The fact that they can't even pick the right actors pisses me off, but the fact they'll add other people in the movie when im sure has nothing to do with her story would just be a waste. Hell even if Ken and Ryu was just a 10 minute cameo would do me justice. Yet they add other people and not them is stupid.

No sorry Im not going to give it a chance, its sounding horrible. I will watch it, but im not going to be excited or anything just see how much of a screw up it was. Also the 96 SF did have ken and Ryu in even though it was his story. Same point Im making. At least show them for 10 minutes even if its a backflash of the past something. They are street fighter. You can't possible tell me Ken and Ryu isn't.

They have yet to prove to me this movie will be good. None of the actors, except Balrog, is even good. Chris Klein Storm? Honestly its made of fail. Thumb me down but its my honest opinion, and im a huge huge SF fan. I grew up with the SNES versions and the first ones.

I just put the animated series as an example.

They can't pick the right actors? Holy crap, not all 6 billion+ people in this world are actors, you won't find many look-alikes. Kruek is part Chinese from her father's side in the first place...

Umm...Balrog has had involvement with her story. As have most of the other cast, like Gen and others. Ken and Ryu doing a 10-minute cameo would piss people off even more. "Why didn't they get longer screen time?!" It'd be like Venom's screen time in Spidey 3.

Don't watch it Final. With your mindset, not giving it a chance, you'll just come back and bash the damn thing, looking for any flaws or negatives with the film and not focusing on any good parts. I'm not saying it's going to be movie of the year, but it's not looking half-bad. I know it'll be better than the '96 one.
