Motion Controls: Has the Wii had it's chance?

jam_sponge | May 29, 2008 | News | Wii Gaming Tech/Hardware
Gamingverdict takes a long hard look at the way which motion controls are being used on the Wii, and begins to ask the question of whether or not it's realistic to continue to hope for motion controls to realize their full potential on Nintendo's console.

I think one consideration not mentioned in the article is that the motion sensing technology used in the Wiimote is no where near as accurate as was believed before launch, and would not be significantly improved by moving to another system. In some ways, the Wiimote's technology simply is not able to translate the full range of motions our imaginations can come up with. The technology just isn't that sophisticated yet, no matter the console. This is also apparent in the lack of use of PS3's motion sensing abilities. Wii has made a good introduction of the technology, and its huge potential for casual and hardcore gaming, but I believe it will not be until future generations of consoles and accelerometers that one-to-one motion will become common in gaming.

DusktoDawn your final comment was hilariously stupid... I don't know if you were trying to be funny but button control schemes have more than proved themselves over the 30 years of home video gaming and even longer if you step back to the arcades.

When the Wii came out, the one thing I couldn't "get" was how you could design a game for PS3 or 360 and then translate that to the wii. Buttons are buttons are buttons, yes PS3 and 360 controllers are different, but not THAT different. How do developers take thetime to design a Madden for the Wii and make it work?

I think motion sensoring is a cool idea, but maybe it's the shape of the Wii-mote or the accuracy of the sensor. I mean the Wii is fun, but in terms of accuracy it is like 80% accurate with my motions. Also after like years of button gameplay I'm not use to this. As technology get's better though it will get more accurate I just think they might of came on a little too strong with the Wii-mote, Miyamoto's fault.

Actually, I like to think that Nintendo will abandon motion controls and move to something new next-gen. Why? By the time the Wii "dies" out, it would have saturated the market with it's novelty. Also, if the rumors are true and MS is planning to incorporate motion-sensing, then Nintendo would want to create something new. The only possible reason for keeping motion controls on the next gen would be an advancement in technology which could add more accuracy etc. However, after the "success" of the Wii, whatever they decide to create has to be just as revolutionary if they want to keep up the sales figures.

To be totally honest, I'm kind-of hoping that Nintendo will ditch the motion-control and just focus on producing good games and only allowing good third-partiy titles on their console.

Nintendo make a big deal over the "innovation" of their motion-control, yet there are only a small handful of games that use the motion-control for something more than "waggling at the screen".
I don't know about anyone else, but I don't find repeatedly "waggling" my wrist at the screen to be much fun at all - If anything, it just gives me a pain in the wrist.

motion sensor controls aren't new anymore. nintendo is going to have to brainstorm again, and come up with something new for idiots (rather, customers) to fiend over.

It seems with most Nintendo Wii games, all you do is wave your arm about wildly to do anything. It doesn't really require that much skill, does it? Are there any First-Person Shooters on the Wii yet? If so are they any good?
