What's coming next from Nintendo?

theundertakergonzo | May 21, 2008 | Industry News | Wii
Well Gamesradar looks at what could be coming next from Nintendo.
They say they're not chucking ideas around so let's put these in the 'educated guesses' category.
The first guess on the list was Animal Crossing which was followed by Kid Icarus then F-Zero Wii and followed up by more possible Nintendo games continuing on.
If you’ve been playing games long enough, you’ll know that Nintendo loves to drip feed each of their systems with a “sequel” to an existing, beloved franchise. But something’s different now. The Wii has released most big name titles within the console’s relatively short 18-month span - Zelda, Metroid, Mario, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Mario Party, WarioWare and hell, even Paper Mario.

It’s no secret Nintendo is primarily aiming for a casual audience these days, but with most Wii games receiving piss poor reviews we’re growing increasingly concerned about the hardcore gamers. History shows that a typical console life span can be 5-7 years, and if that’s the case then we gotta wonder exactly what we should be excited for. According to Nintendo of America’s president, Reggie Fils-Aime, we should be getting a glimpse of the Big N’s big holiday game at this year’s E3 in July. What can this secret game be? We’ve put together a list of the possible candidates for the Wii. Remember, these aren’t actual games… yet. It’s just speculation based on educated guesses. Behold!

It better not be another goddamn party game. We don't need another "Mario Tennis" or "DK Coconut Bowling".

Any Wii owner would know only too well how few decent Wii games there actually are. I'm not taking a stab at the Wii here, but once you finish with the big-name games like Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Metroid, Brawl, etc. there isn't much else to do or look forward to (unless you're really into the online modes on Brawl and Mario Kart).
And Nintendo isn't helping the matter with all these "secret announcements" and telling people to wait. Announce more games that your fans are interested in, or you're going to start losing people.

A little third-party support wouldn't go astray either. What's the Wii known for right now? - It's first-party games (with the same ol' characters, scenarios, etc. that we're all used to). Give us something new and different, plz!

The problem is that the few third party games that are actually decent get over looked because of the numerous other shitty ones that get churned out constantly.

The only thing they're known for is Wii fit. Which means soon they will announce a Wii Bike, Wii Dumb bells, and Wii food.

I think what you're saying is mere opinion, to be honest. Sure, Zelda, Mario, Metroid and other first party games are what Nintendo's systems are usually about, but that doesn't mean all of the third party games are totally useless. I'll admit, the Wii has some really assbackwards games that totally could've been given another six months in development. *CoughFarCryVengeanceCough* The real problem is that games aren't being given enough time in development and shipping the games out faster than the Kids Bop CD series.

There are also more than "a few" decent Wii games. There's also more than just a few on the way.

There really are only a few decent, even good Wii games out there. Right now, the Wii is struggling the most to get games out on the market that are actually good. They have games that sell well because many are intended for either a younger audience or casual gamers that don't care much or know much about what other games are out there. Still, they are definitely alienating "hardcore" and even "moderate" gamers that would like to play something more than some barebones sports games or a party game.

What's the Wii have, really? Zelda, Mario Galaxy, SSB:B, Resident Evil, Metroid, and Mario Kart?? The horizon certainly doesn't look too bright either, with their future seeming to consist of WiiFit and other horribly overpriced peripheral based games with little actual value to anyone but a very, very casual gamer.

The same can be said about any console on the market. There are around 10 to 15 top tier, must own games for each system. The problem is, their is so much shovelware on Wii that there is more crap to shift through to find the gems, as is always the case with the best selling console of each generation.

Anyway, at this point I am far more interested to see a new franchise from Nintendo than a new version of an old franchise. The only exception is the mentioned Kid Icarus game, since its 3D rendition will basically be a new franchise. Everyone knows Nintendo will bring its "second tier" franchises to Wii, it is only a matter of time. However, the best Wii games are the ones that use the system's strengths and capabilities within new and original ideas that can't be done on another system, and trying to conform older series to this standard is far less interesting than fresh ideas. I'm particularly interested to see what Miyamoto has been working on since finishing Wii Fit last year.

The thing is that those games aren't even "must haves". They're the best on the console, but they aren't anything to write home about (Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart seem to be pretty good though).

That is your personal opinion. For example, Mario Galaxy was picked as overall game of the year by numerous internet and print groups, above competition like Bioshock and CoD4.

Did I not just say that Mario Galaxy is a good game? Yeah, I'm pretty sure I did. Even then, I absolutely loathe the camera in that game.

The problem is that, while other consoles also only have a handful of "top" games, there's a variety of them. They are different genres, from different companies, with different characters and concepts. A popular game from Squeenix will be completely different than a popular came from Konami (yet they will still both be top sellers).

On the other hand ... Nintendo's top games all come from Nintendo. They are all very similar, they all have the same ol' characters, and they are all first-party games. There's nothing surprising, or new (unless you could things like Wii Fit), or unique - It's all just "same old, same old", and fans will eventually get sick of it.

I dunno GG, they've put up with it for decades.

The article doesn't really tell us anything we don't know. Those games are bound to come out on the console sooner or later. However, I think that Animal Crossing will probably be out by christmas season. Also didn't Nintendo's top secret game turn out to be Mario Baseball? How lame...Ninty's really doing a crappy job at pleasing the fans this time around.

Let me guess the games will appeal to the casual masses will probably involve either being called fat or uneducated and will probably have 70 mini games that are all same they just swap the actions around and add or subtract the number of players allowed to play said mini game... Where do i buy?

i love how nobody gave a flying *bleep* about kid icarus until brawl, now it's a classic.

like it matters what they do next. they're just going to take whatever good, or semi-good game franchise they already have and fag it out with the wiimote while everyone calls it groundbreaking.

everyone stand back while they ruin f-zero.

Lets make a list of good Nintendo franchises that were "fagged out" with the Wii Remote.

      - Super Mario Galax... oh wait. That game was praised for it's accurate platforming controls, made better by the Wii Remote.
      - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princes... bummer, again! 99.9% of people preferred the Wii version over the Gamecube version because of the Wii Remote. The Wii controls turned out to be alot better than standard controls.
      - Metroid Prime 3: Corrup... geez, whats going on? The Wii Remote sucks for FPSs, right? Wrong. Metroid 3's control setup, (made possible only by the Wii Remote) was praised for being alot BETTER than any dual-analog stick FPS control setup before it.
      - Super Smash Bros Brawl... nah. While the Wii Remote controls weren't superior to standard controls, it played just as well.

So as you can see, in every case listed here, the Wii Remote was superior, or just as good, as traditional controls.

Mind listing any Nintendo franchises that Nintendo screwed up with the Wii remote?

Uhh...no. The Wii remote isn't superior, Its only superior to you cause its new than just a controller. When Me and a few rather not use the Wii mote for Metroid prime, Zelda, SSBB, and SMG. Standard Controllers feel better with those type of games. All the Wii Mote is a New cheap Gimmick, while it does work fantastically on Wii sports and such, for games of those stature does nothing but make it tedious and boring to use.

Of course we all have our opinions, and tastes. But I don't allow myself to be feed by the nonsense claiming the Wii Mote is superior to standard controllers. Its an interesting and new way to play games, but not to base all your library on it. Thats why among the masses of games Nintendo has right now, only 8 games are possible great and must buy.

My problem is people like me who want a Wii can't get any cause of the idiots buying the console for only Wii sports, and then having to wait for more to be coming in. And believe me between Sereph working at gamestop, and me going to those stores where I am its like 90% of the people getting a Wii for that purpose. I would love to get those other games myself to finish the story, mind you I only played them for 2 and half hours each, but can't.

Brawl and Galaxy I won't argue on, due to the fact any moron should know the gamecube controller is far superior to the wii mote for brawl. Galaxy was overall a very fun game, though I got very annoyed flicking my wrist all the damn time.

Metroid Prime 3, I'm gonna be frank and honest, was one of the worst games I have ever played in my life, control wise and game wise. Me being a big FPS fan, I can honestly say compared to a 360 controller or PC mouse, the Wii mote is a piece of shit for FPS games.

Really? I've been hearing the complete opposite. The people in the IGN forums, gametrailer forums, and 4chan /v/, most people kept saying how the gamecube version was so much superior to the wii version.

Really, it's all opinion, and I'm just posting my own views. But overall, I'm going to have to agree with FB (I can't believe I just said that) and BA.

JFG was an amazing game. However, it was developed by Rare iirc and we all the know that any chance of a sequel's pretty much dead now. Plus it didn't really have that huge of a fanbase despite being a great game.

I'll add my views to the pile..

Brawl: Gamecube by far the superior control set-up, enough said.
Galaxy: Definitely better to have it than not to have it, they nailed it on the head for its simple use. Bravo.
Twilight Princess: Wii controls makes it better overall, but some bits were lacking. The Bow and Arrow aiming was fantastic, though the sword swiping was a little disappointing and tacked on.
Metroid Corruption: Awesome result, puts Red Steel to shame, and is my favourite FPS control method.
Mario Kart: Gamecube controller works best for most, but the Wii Wheel still works really well as an alternative control method, one which I use as my main one.

As a whole, in my opinion, for the quality games on the Wii, the controls are completely spot on which for me puts the games ahead of the rest. On the other hand, the third party games have done a shit job with the Wii controls, with nearly every one being lazily tacked on.

Oh, and as for the article itself, I can see a new Animal Crossing and F-Zero in the near future.

Oh, of course it will be MMO. Animal Crossing: Wild World's WiFi was a nearly outrageous success. They'd be fools not to do that again.
