The supercharged American holiday shopping season has passed us by, and the NPD results all show great increases. With their December 2007 report, the NPD Group has also released their Annual 2007 numbers also. As always, many thanks to the NPD Group and sonycowboy at
NeoGAF for reporting and the actual numbers.
As far as I know, it is a standard four-week tracking week, from December 5 to January 1.

Basically, everything is in the millions except for the PS3. The holiday shopping fervor is in full force. The Nintendo DS, however, is extremely ridiculous at the large amount of units it is pushing out the door. You also have to wonder what the Wii's number would have been if the supply wasn't constrained. The 360 is still going on strong, with sales on both fronts. The PlayStation family is still trucking along, with the PS2 and the PSP supporting the PS3.
As for software, the 360 version of Call of Duty 4 is the top seller of the month once more, closely followed by Super Mario Galaxy. Guitar Hero III shows up twice again in the top sellers of the month, with the PS2 and the 360 versions. With the Christmas season, seeing the common popular games showing up on the top ten isn't so surprising, with Halo 3, Assassin's Creed (360), Brain Age 2, and Wii Play also garnering top ten spots.
Now, let's shift over to the 2007 Annual: the final numbers for 2007:
Hardware Sales:
PlayStation 2 3.97 million
PlayStation 3 2.56 million
PlayStation Portable 3.82 million
Xbox 360 4.62 million
Wii 6.29 million
Nintendo DS 8.50 million
Software Sales (Top 10 SKUs):
01. 360 HALO 3 MICROSOFT (CORP) 4.82 million - Release: 09/25/07
02. WII PLAY W/ REMOTE NINTENDO OF AMERICA 4.12 million - Release: 02/12/07
03. 360 CALL OF DUTY 4: MODERN WARFARE ACTIVISION (CORP) 3.04 million - Release: 11/06/07
04. PS2 GUITAR HERO III: LEGENDS OF ROCK ACTIVISION (CORP) 2.72 million - Release: 10/28/07
05. WII SUPER MARIO GALAXY NINTENDO OF AMERICA 2.52 million - Release: 11/12/07
06. NDS POKEMON DIAMOND VERSION NINTENDO OF AMERICA 2.48 million - Release: 04/22/07
07. PS2 MADDEN NFL 08 ELECTRONIC ARTS 1.90 million - Release: 08/14/07
08. PS2 GUITAR HERO 2 ACTIVISION (CORP) 1.89 million - Release: 11/07/06
09. 360 ASSASSIN'S CREED UBISOFT 1.87 million - Release: 11/14/07
10. WII MARIO PARTY 8 NINTENDO OF AMERICA - 1.82 million Release: 05/29/07
With the hardware numbers, it's no real surprise how well things have sold. The Nintendo DS and Wii are still incredibly popular, along with the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 2. We can't forget the PSP either, but the PlayStation 3 is continuing to play catchup to every other major system on the current market in the US.
There's also no real surprises in the top ten software, either. Everyone would expect Halo 3 to basically own all in sales, reaching 4.82 million when you combine the sales of all its editions in the past four months. The other games in the top ten are games that have stuck around the top ten, and are all games that you would have expected to sell incredibly well.

Sigh, that's what a friend who works at a local game store let me in on...still waiting to get a DS because of it. Still, good to see that the games and consoles did well. Props to SMG and CoD4!
