Media Create 12/31/07 - 01/06/08 Japanese Sales: Nintendo Rings in the New Year

Quickly after updating with the previous week's pre-New Year's sales, Media Create has updated their weekly rankings to reflect the sales for the week of one the biggest holiday shopping weeks in Japan, New Year's. Nintendo regains control of the top ten after Sony's penetration the previous week, and games on Nintendo consoles make for 41 out of the 50 games in the Top 50.

The top seller for this New Year's week is the child-favorite Mario Party DS, selling 196k copies. Next up is the newest Wii million-seller, Wii Fit, getting over the hump with 127k units sold. Rounding out the top five are Wii Sports (WII - 118k), Final Fantasy IV (NDS - 91k) and Super Mario Galaxy (WII - 82k).

As for hardware, either the original DS, GBA models and GC didn't sell any, or weren't tracked:
This Week - Last Week: +/-
DSL: 266,568 - 218,876: +47,692
PSP: 218,234 - 161,370: +56,864
WII: 207,797 - 152,209: +55,588
PS3: 64,183 - 52,706: +11,477
PS2: 32,010 - 25,569: +6,441
360: 9,763 - 8,304: +1,459

Nintendo continues to lead the way, greatly capitalizing on this holiday season with popular games out for both the DS and Wii. Mario Party DS (#1) continues to sell incredibly strong, especially to the children this week itching to spend their New Year's money. Wii Fit (#2) with this week becomes the next Wii game to break the million mark in Japan, and probably in another month or so, Super Mario Galaxy (#5) will join Wii Fit in hitting a million. Also with more Wiis going out the door, Wii Sports (#3) and Wii Play (#6) are again selling to the new buyers, and the Wii titles are complemented with Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (#9) and Mario Party 8 (#10), which had stealthily become a million seller the past couple of weeks.

The PSP continues to sell at ridiculously high numbers, but once again, the top software seller isn't in the top ten; Monster Hunter Portable 2nd sits at #14, and since the #10 game sold at 66k, #14 probably lies around 55k-60k, which, while decent is not as well-proportioned to the hardware amounts that are selling. The Sony console games that had penetrated the top ten last week, Super Robot Wars OG Gaiden (#1 prev, #18 now), Star Ocean: First Departure (#5 prev, #16 now), and Haruhi Suzumiya's Promise (#7 prev, uncharted this week) have all dropped. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (#33) is also the top weekly seller for the PS3 this week.

After only managing one game in the top fifty last week, the 360 does not have any games in the top fifty this week.

Again, Square Enix and Level 5 capitalize once again, with their games reaching the top ten. Final Fantasy IV DS (#4) and Dragon Quest IV DS (#7) for Square Enix, and Professor Layton and Pandora's Box (#8) for Level 5. Also notable is Marvelous Entertainment's Rune Factory 2 which debuted at #12.

I guess they really loved SM Galaxy. Though their avid love of the DS eludes me...

Nice to see the PS3 doing well over there, though!

    Final Fantasy IV <3

The DS is still alive and kicking ass XD Great numbers for Nintendo. The competition should be getting tighter this year though, I'm sure of that.
