Crytek predicts 'next-gen' consoles will arrive in 2011 / 2012

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has seen this future and has concluded that the next generation of consoles -- as in the Xbox 720 and the PlayStation 4 -- could arrive in 2011 or 2012.
Crytek, which most recently worked on Crysis Warhead, has also pinned 2012 as the debut year for its next in-house engine and follow-up to last year's impressive CryEngine2.
"The PlayStation 4 and Xbox '720' will arrive in 2011 or 2012, we think," said Yerli. "But this is just our estimate - we don't know, and even if Microsoft and Sony told us, I couldn't say because it would be under NDA.

Yerli, giving a talk on "The Future of Gaming Graphics", also explained Crytek's plans for a new version of its in-house engine to be released in 2012, but stated his belief that the effective current gaming maximums would remain at resolutions of 1920x1080 and 60 frames per second until that time.

He also added that he believed GPUs and CPUs were on a collision course, with the former becoming more effective at general computing, and the latter more effective at parallel tasks - and that software such as DirectX 11 would help that collision to happen towards the end of 2009.

I think Crytek is full of crap. Other sources have contradicted this and well..I think they're full of crap in general (this is the same company that blames its poor sales of Crysis pretty much solely on piracy). Consoles are just getting started. 2011/2012 they'll be in full stride, not being replaced, I think.

I predict this is how the world ends. The Playstation 4 or Xbox 720 will be released with bombs in every one, just like what was rumored to happen with the Playstation 2. Then everyone turns their consoles on for the first time, and BAM!Teh Apocalypse!
