Ubisoft gets a lot of flack for the low quality software they put out on the Wii, but can you blame them for trying to make money? Unfortuantely for the hardcore gamer, games like Petz and (the newly announced) Party Babyz make Ubisoft a good amount of money, but only when considering the low development costs. But these games do not signify the future of the Wii and DS.
There will always be low quality software. The good news is that the Wii market should stabilize into a more friendlier space for so-called hardcore titles.
While one might think there’s a “war” between hardcore and casual, the real subconcious hate is directed toward low quality. While, the way out there, Nintendo bashers hate Wii Fit and Wii Sports, most hardcore gamers are at least interested in them and have no problem with them. It’s “casual” games by third parties who spend much less resources and use bad teams that cause hardcore gamers to squirm. In fact most hardcore gamers who hate Wii Fit and Wii sports, hate them because of the precedent they set. It shows other publishers that casual games can make lots of money. What most publishers aren’t doing is putting their best teams on it like Nintendo is.
With a userbase as large as the Wii, it will only be a matter of time before the big blockbusters start coming. Hardcore gamers still, and will continue to make up an integral part of the game market. Just as the name implies, “casual” gamers are just that, casual. They won’t play as much and will buy less games. As developers learn to understand the Wii just like they did with the Nintendo DS, and as publishers learn that casual does not equal low quality, the hardcore and casual markets will balance.
