The NES and SNES were the only consoles for the first 6 Final Fantasy games. They sold brilliantly and developed a massive fanbase, however this all changed in the 5th generation. Square were unhappy with Nintendo's decision to use cartridges in their next console, they flat-out told Nintendo that if they went ahead with it then Final Fantasy would move to the newer and more favorable PlayStation.
