The rise and fall of the classic RPG

"Call me old school, but I grew up with traditional RPG games like Ultima and Might 'n' Magic on the PC and Final Fantasy/Dragon Warrior on the NES and SNES. I understand that technology has to evolve, but why does the gameplay have to be thrown out the window? Why does the feel of an RPG have to be so 'cold' now? Why is it that with the advent of 3D technology all games, RPGs especially now have to be 'ultra-realistic'? RPGs are based in FANTASY. Games are meant to be challenging and fun. Gam..."

Hands on with Final Fantasy IV DS

Magimaster | 23 days 13 hours ago | Previews | DS  | views: 1860
"We're now on our second leg of Final Fantasy remakes, as Square Enix continues to take the original classic role playing games – the ones that never made it to the US originally, or arrived only in edited form – and give them a DS boost. Final Fantasy III was a worthy rebirth, but with minimal changes and some odd use of the DS overall it was far from greatness, despite still having a pretty engaging core. With Final Fantasy IV, however, it's apparent even in the game's opening hours that DS ..."

Final Fantasy Titles Need a New Theme

plower glove | May 30, 2008 | Blog | Misc  | views: 1253
"The allure just isn't there anymore for the Final Fantasy titles and we have to ask why. Loyal fans try to create hype, but the games are just not combining new and old expectations. Maybe it's because every game, we have to warm up to new characters and worlds. Square sets itself up for hit and miss titles with no character regularity. The only motif running through the series I can identify is a blond guy and clueless protagonists. Most of the recent Final Fantasy games (dare I say Square ..."

The 20 Japanese RPGs you need to play before you die.

Gothic Girl | March 19, 2008 | Blog | Playstation 2 Playstation 3  | views: 6302
"The Japanese role-playing game is a surprisingly important genre for developers to study - both in terms of gameplay and storytelling, and Gamasutra presents an 'Essential 20' explaining and chronicling the top JRPGs of all-time.

Valkyrie Profile: In most RPGs, it's your job to stop the end of the world. In Valkyrie Profile, it's your job to start it.
The battle system is a strange beast, with actions for each of the four party members assigned to a face button. Each character has a numbe..."

"The much-awaited game title Final Fantasy IV has officially been confirmed for the Nintendo DS handheld game system. This announcement was revealed at the Square Enix Party 2007, where the game publishing company said that it is currently in the process of developing a remake of its 1991 SFC/SNEC game.

Final Fantasy IV DS Scan

Wolfwood | May 09, 2007 | News | DS  | views: 2000
Now that the FFIV for the DS is all but confirmed, what will the latest remake for the SNES classic look like on the portable? Shonen Jump provides a first look at the title. The game does indeed appear to be in the vein of the FFIII DS remake graphics-wise, which is to be expected given that the FFIII DS team is behind the scenes here.

Hey, at least we know it's still got Octomamm!!! Sexy.
