PS3 FW Update 2.40 FAQ

HisServant77 | July 01, 2008 | FAQs | Playstation 3
To help answer some questions about the 2.4 update for the PS3, Eric Lempel took some of our questions from the Blog and created an FAQ. It may not answer all the questions we have, but it helps, and more questions are answered in the comments section of the Playstation Blog!
Will voice-messaging/private chat be featured in 2.40 as well? If not, can we expect to see this feature added in the future?
...
Can you use the web browser in game?
...
Will In-Game XMB come up during playback of PS2 games, Blu-Ray discs, and DVDs?
...
Can we go to the display settings and change anything there in-game (resolution, input, etc)?
...
Will it be possible to change in-game the sound output?
...
Will we be able to access the PLAYSTATION Store while in-game?
...
Will we be able to stream music (either via media server or USB drive) for custom soundtracks or is it relegated to music stored on the HDD?
...
Does 2.4 enable cross game invites? Will it down the line?
...
Will trophies be mandatory for all games release here on out?
...
Where is each player’s trophy stat info held? I am going to upgrade my hard drive and I don’t know if the trophies will still be on my account if I earn some and then get a new hard drive.
...
Will the patch automatically allocate unlocked trophies according to your saved files or would you have to do it again?
...
Can we view PSN profiles/Trophies from a PC using a Web browser? Will there be an API for web developers to access the PSN data, so online profiles can be created?
...
Can you only compare trophies with friends that are online?
...
Is there a limit to how many trophies the devs can put set by Sony?
...
Will new games have a cool little icon on the back saying “trophy compatible?”
...
When you get a trophy, does it make a noise?
...
What is Eric’s favorite cheese?

    Awesome article. Thanks, HisServant.

These trophies sound much better than achievements on the 360. We'll just have to wait and see.

Also, about the noises that trophies make when you earn them, I think it would be so cool if those noises were different for each game or, better yet, for each individual trophy. The latter probably won't happen, but does anyone agree with the former idea?

I'd love to be playing MGS4 and then hearing Snake congratulate me for beating an Act or doing something impressive. It may sound lame to some people, but, personally, I'd love something like that.

Thanks, Yeah I think that'd be awesome if they let the devs change the sound of the trophies to customize them for each game

The lack of features is quite surprising. The in-game XMB seems severely limited; I hoped we could access it in all games, not just PS3 games. Secondly, in-game music seems terribly lackluster; only in games that support. So the only games featuring in-game music are the ones that already had it before 2.40. Which makes it a useless update feature. Pixeljunk Monsters showcased in-game music, but apparently it was a test and won't be featured in that game. We need individual patches from every game to use these features, so we're looking at many, many patches on your HDD.

So no custom soundtracks for my PS2 games.

So far only SSHD, Pain and possibly Pixeljunk Monsters. So there's 3. You'll need patches for other games to use custom music.

Well, I never expected custom soundtracks for the PS2 games, but I never even thought about how much space the patches will take up...

I have a 60 Gig HDD and It's only got 16 Gig's left. I could probably get it up to 20 Gigs if I deleted some stuff I don't need, but still, I find this ridiculous.

I have 14 games for the PS3, and judging from the sizes of *bleep*ing installs most games need, I'm only going to be able to have about 20 or so games total before my HDD fills completely up.

You can always delete the installs when you're done playing the game. Why have the DMC4 or MGS4 intall on your HDD if you haven't played in a year? I generally only keep the games I'm currently playing intalled. The rest I delete and install again when and if I decide to pick them up again.

Good idea, Koloth, I hadn't thought of that. I need to take out DMC4 as I probably won't pick it up again for a while (that and my godbro's borrowing it, I can't play it now even if I wanted to).

That doesn't account for the many, many patches we'll need to get full trophy/music functionally out of all our games. Odds are many developers won't even bother. So then we're stuck with a small handful of 2.40-compatible games.

You can delete patches too. There is nothing on the HDD that can't be deleted if need be.

And it isn't as if future games will need to be patched. It is only the past games. And most people don't have more than maybe 15 of those. I doubt all of them will bother to patch. And most people won't bother to go back to them even if they do.

        You're frankly over reacting.

Not to mention that, apparently, for us to use the Music feature of the XMB, we have to have the music on our HDD.

Of course, that's somthing else that can be deleted, but my taste in music changes so often that it would get a bit tedious, and I'm sure many other people are the same way.

I find it hilarious that I said the same thing only to get an argument by people and get thumbs down, yet you said it and get praised.

FB, sorry if you got thumbed down for the same thing. Just remember though it's also how you say something, as well as what you say. Some people will respond negatively if something is told to them in the wrong way.

Well there will be trophies for SSHD if you have it. I do, it's a decent game, and with trophies there seems another thing to aim for beside just the overall score.

So grateful for the inclusion of in-game XMB at last, even if it's function is quite gimped. Still, it has in-game messaging and I am certainly not one to begrudge that. However, I have yet to find a single game in my collection which supports the in-game music feature and only one currently which has trophies implemented within it, which is quite disappointing. While I'm sure the trophies will be extended in range as time passes on, the lack of compatible music-playing games almost makes the feature redundant. Not being able to draw up an in-game XMB during a DVD or movie is also disappointing.

There's a lot more work to do to make this update worth the wait.

Yes I agree as well. They should have taken there time and make it better than what it was.

Psh. They've been getting shit about how they didn't have an in-game XMB for the past year. Now they put it in and people complain because it's not good enough? People were bitch enough already because "It's taking too long!".

          Orly?

Didn't you hear that the FW bricked a few PS3's well if that doesn't tell you how the update was rushed I don't know what is. I will agree that in game messaging was a need per say, but In game music? Sorry I don't see it as a need. In game voice chat is another nice addition but doesn't mean its a need. Trophies are the main issue i see. The fact that you NEED to reply all your games to 100% to get trophies, which Criterion knew exactly the correct way it should have been used done it so we don't need to replay the game. Thats my issue, not so much as the other stuff.

I kinda agree, the music thing had me disappointed. I felt when they showed the videos that it seemed like they were rushing things and all that. But . . . what can you do when everyone is hounding you for an update to release ASAP and won't take anything like "let's take some more time to iron out some things" It seems to happen SO much, complain, deliver, then complain because they delivered (or they listen to the minority first time around, to have the majority not like the change, etc.)

But, in-game messaging is great for me since I message a LOT. Now we'll have to wait to see about the music . . .
