Why the Xbox 360 and PS3 Fell Behind the Wii

Forbes writer Brian Caulfield takes a look at why Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's Playstation 3 fell behind Nintendo's Wii. Will Sony and Microsoft catch up with Nintendo? Or is it just too late to make up for mistakes made during the last three years?
Ever since the debut of the Atari 2600 in 1977, if a console vendor's gaming instincts were not clean and strong, consumers would hesitate at the moment of truth. The consoles would not sell. And console makers died.

It's now clear that lesson was lost on Microsoft and Sony. Expect Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer to talk a lot about the Xbox 360 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Wednesday, and Sony Chief Howard Stringer to highlight the role of the PlayStation in that battle as part of his CES keynote the next day.

For now, at least, the two consoles lag far behind Nintendo's Wii, in large part because of the Wii's low price and focus on family-friendly games. As Microsoft and Sony tried to transform their gaming consoles into set-top supercomputers able to juggle any kind of home entertainment, tiny Nintendo snuck by to grab the console crown from Sony's Playstation 2.

Makes sense. The wii is the perfect console for families and younger children. I don't think either will console, imo. Something crazy could happen though, I guess, but nobody really knows what the future holds.

People who don't normally game are buying and playing the Wii. The Wii's not going to go burnout anytime soon.

My parents play my Wii more than I do which is just odd. My Wii is hooked up in my living room unlike my other consoles though.

Same over here, I'm pretty much uninterested until Tenchu, Tri and NMH 2 are launched.

Excuse me while I continue not caring about this. I enjoy my PS3, I don't let sales numbers change that.

Yeah, PS3 is what I play, no sales are gonna change it either. But tbh I think most of those sales are to people who thought it would be reveloutional but turned out to be a disapointment. Not anyone in particular, so anyone replying, saying I am wrong because they think Wii is great, don't.
