Bungie has just released their most teased about Halo announcement which first rocked onto the net just a few months ago, shortly before this years E3. This articles discusses the story behind "todyas" announcement, has video where Bungie staff acknowledge a Halo title in the works and links to verify the existence of a new , as yet un-named IP title. Plus the now released Halo Keep It Clean Teaser Trailer.
There are several analysis's of the teaser trailer for you to check out as well.
Bungie has been teasing gamers with the prospect of a new IP since E3 when their Official Announcement” was pull by MS Head Office moments before it was supposed to become public with the explanation that the announcement was for a “dedicate event” in the future and would serve no purpose if it was announced now. hmmm….Here's the results of the long awaited announcement
Trailer Analysis.
Well this game is clearly Halo, and it seems that it will be the expansion, if you remember on the net a month or so ago, there was a photo of a new main menu for Halo 3, well this probably is what its for. When video starts playing on the screen you can see a slightly hidden Covenant Cruiser behind the buildings creeping in the city.
The camera moves to the city floor, and you can see the words "New Mombasa" on a screen on one side of the wall. So we know this is still good old halo, in our favorite city. As shown by the mass amount of drop pods that flood the sky the most common assumption is that we will be playing as ODST members, not as the Master Chief but if you remember, Master Chief has dropped down with ODST's before......
I was actually expecting a game set in the Marathon universe, especially following the re-release of the original single player with (one of the first titles along with DOOM) multiplayer Mac hit (for those that were doing mac lan parties back in the day) or a return to their Myth franchise *which turned to garbage by Myth 3).
I also contemplated them delivering the Oni game they promised but was never released (instead an unfinished monstrocity called "Oni" came out missing 60% of the fights/features they showed off in working form in the original Oni trailer.)
Now if it was a new IP or a new part of the universe then fine, but all this for an expansion pack, which will be a stand-alone one sold btw, not a download.
Yes Bungie are free entities with regards to "other" IP's, but MS own the IP for Halo, so they dictate what takes place with it, and how it is promoted and directed. Bungie do the development.
They could turn it down, but they would lose any support they have with MS, plus lose a huge wad of cash that helps their studio stay alive.
They are makingother games with other publishers, so we should be thankful thatthey are now free to doo so.
There is still the high probability that Gearbox will be doing a Halo universe FPS at some stage. Not a continuation of the current Halo series, but a new one. Much like how Ubisoft treat their Tom Clancy franchise. Still the same name, but different games and storylines.
