"I'm not a fanboy, I just don't like your console"

Gothic Girl | July 09, 2008 | Blog | Playstation 3 Wii
The term "fanboy" is something that has been thrown around alot lately. But is there a line between a fanboy and a person who genuinely prefers one console over another? Games Equal Life takes a look at what has become of this generation's gaming community and what people seem to think a "fanboy" is ...
By now you are probably thinking I'm a 360 fanboy. But why? Because I have an opinion? Because I prefer one of my consoles over another? The XBox 360 suits my tastes. So why am I ostracised for it?
This is where the "anti fanboy" mentality confuses me. I understand calling a fanboy a fanboy. If someone enters a forum and spouts "I LUV 360! HALO ROX! WII AND SONY SUXXXX!" then they probably deserve to be spoken to harshly by regulars of that forum.
But why is it wrong for me to prefer playing one console over another? Every human in existence has preferences. But that does not stop overly passionate Wii or PS3 owners from publicly dissing me in a bid to prove how infinitely awesome their console is. I don't care how "awesome" another console is. I am happy with my 360 and I prefer its games. They suit my preferences. My PS3 and Wii are collecting dust and for some reason that makes me a fanboy?

Why is it that people can no longer discuss consoles in a friendly and happy manner? We are now reduced to segregated groups of "PS3 owners", "Xbox 360 owners" and "Wii owners". If you are like me and own more than one then you are considered a freak by all groups. It's like being in school all over again.
This didn't happen last gen. It didn't happen the gen before. People could safely discuss different consoles without fearing being abused or insulted by someone who doesn't like your opinion. Dare I say, forums were friendly back in the day.

Everyone has a preference. Like me for example, I have all three platforms, but I prefer 360. I just like the lineup of games better. I also love the controller.

I think its not so much having a preference, but believing that that preference matters that is annoying. I have no problems when people say "I prefer Xbox to Nintendo and Sony" but find it rather annoying when people use this preference as some kind of point, such as saying "I prefer Xbox, never play my Wii, so Wii sucks." Unfortunately, their is a lot more of the later than than the former on forums these days, hence the counter reaction noted in the article.

Well I think the Wii sucks. Does that make me a fanboy?

Well, I understand what you are trying to say, but saying the Wii sucks isn't really an opinion. You can hate it all you want but it doesn't "suck" no matter how you feel about a console. Same applies for the other consoles. I think the 360 is a great console, but I can never find any use for it anymore (I'm not a fan of shooters). It doesn't suck, I just don't prefer it.

The correct term for how you feel is not "I think the Wii sucks" (that would mean you believe the Wii just sucks in general), it's "I don't prefer the Wii like certain people do".

It doesn't matter which way I put it because it's coming from me, therefore inherently being my opinion. This should be obvious. "Fish is nasty." Is everyone going to spread the word that fish is nasty now? No. I"m not the authority on life, I'm just saying how I feel about it.

I own a Nintendo Wii and I still think it sucks hard compared to my PS3 and 360, does that make me a fanboy?

As long as you don't believe your opinion is some universal truth, than no, I don't think your a fanboy, as long as you have some reasoning/intelligence.

Well if someone has fun with it, I'm not going to judge them or anything. I just feel like it's a joke as a videogame system. People get upset when the whole casual VS hardcore gamer argument comes up, but I think the Wii further makes it all that much more relevant. Wii reminds me of those controllers with hundreds of mini games already installed on them that you plug directly into your TV.

Like Seproth, I'm around the three current consoles (one owned by me), but I too prefer the 360 overall. Better library, online capabilities, controller working very well for FPS and such.

There's nothing wrong with being a fanboy.

    Main Entry: fan·boy
    Pronunciation: \ˈfan-ˌbȯi\
    Function: noun
    Date: 1919
: a boy who is an enthusiastic devotee (as of comics or movies)

    We're all fanboys, see?

If you want to directly translate "fanboy", it spells out fan, and boy. You are a fan of something, and you are a boy. If you aren't a fanboy, you are a fangirl, or you contain the largest amount of indifference the world has ever seen.

Now that that's out of the way, using "fanboy" the way we refer to it as today, fanboys are people who like one certain console, but bitch about why the other consoles suck, even if the reasons are non-sensical. You can favorite a certain console and not be a fanboy.

a fan boy is a person who is so in love with a game or system that they cant see its faults. all they care about is how amazing their choice is and trying to convince everyone else to see how right they are. i have a preference. i love the ps3, but that doesnt stop me from enjoying the merrits of 360 or wii. i loved mass effect. borrowed my brothers 360 for it. but it is possible to not like other consoles and not be a fan boy. i can see why people like the wii, but i dont. thats my opinion and in itself is not a fan boy statement. if i were to say "the wii is stupid blah blah blah" and go on and on forever as if people actually cared about my opinion then it would be fan boy-ish

Can we just accept that nowadays, 'fanboy', and 'fangirl' can contain negative connotations? In the case of consoles, it is (generally) referred to as the 'Preference of one console/console-producer (and it's associated games, particularly exclusives), to the exclusion of all others'. Now, that by itself is a bit unreasonable. It is one thing if you can't afford another console, or you don't see enough on other consoles that can motivate you to get them, but it is quite another if you simply prefer a given console for no real reason, aside from perhaps, a smattering of excuses (that are often interchangeable between different consoles)...

Basically, those sorts of rabid fanboys/fangirls give the rest of them a bad name >_>

Now, on to the article, yes?

LOL, he got harassed simply because he knocked off 0.5 from a perfect score? Yeesh, fanboys are really the dumbest breed of gamers, or at least they cannot think that well, in any case >_> Metal Gear Solid IV isn't ALL that. I have it, and have played it a bit (not finished, mind you). Good game, but it is overhyped IMO >_>

I'm sort of like this guy. I have two 'next gen' consoles (360 and PS3). I got my 360 first, and my PS3 about 6 or 7 months later. I use my PS3 more these days. I simply don't have the money to get all the games I want for both consoles, so I focus on the PS3, primarily because it doesn't charge to play online (saves me about $60 or something, a year). Plus, I've already got it set up to play in 1080p on my HDTV (my old Pro doesn't have HDMI, so it is stuck at 1080i). It can also play Blu-ray movies (of which I have two), and can upscale DVDs pretty well....Not to mention it has some exclusives that I really want (not to say the 360 doesn't have exclusives I want, just less of them).

All perfectly good reasons, yes? Yet I'm pretty sure there would be more than one MS fanboy out there that would say I'm a 'stupid Sony fanboy, and I suxxors' or something >_>

You know what? We need a new, universal term to describe these types of fanboys....Something clean though, so we can use it on the net without getting bleeped >_>

This post will probably get thumbs down, but I honestly have no gripe with the 360 or Wii. Yes I love the PS3, since im used to Sony systems. However I will be getting a 360, when I get the money, have house bills issues im helping out first.

I agree with iLL with the Wii, however that doesn't mean im going to attack anyone for liking it. To each their own.

I just don't find the Wii having much games that would keep me playing it for years. And Since I can't buy a Wii due to its immense shortages, I can't play the games I want. But thats not a concern, luckily my friend has one, and he likes it, and I play with him. But other than that Im not a fanboy, maybe how I spoke in the past I came across that way, but I learned from my mistakes.

No reason to thumb down your post. That was one of the most well spoken post I have seen. I have the 360 and PS3 and must admit as much as I thought I was a Sony PS fan, I am surprised at how much I love the 360. I play it much more than the PS3. I like the Wii too, although I don't have one. It is a hell of a lot of fun with friends.
